Football fans eagerly anticipating the 2026 World Cup will have more to look forward to as the next event will feature a record 104 matches.
World football’s governing body FIFA announced the changes to the format on Tuesday.
Jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. the 2026 edition will see 48 teams divided into twelve groups of four teams.
The first knockout round will feature 32 teams composed of the top two teams from each group and the eight best third-placed teams.
Since 1998 the tournament had hosted 32 teams and 64 games with only the top two teams from eight groups advancing to the knockout stage.
